Stay Safe! How to Prepare for a Hurricane

It’s still hurricane season, and while we are not directly in the path of Hurricane Matthew we will be getting some rough weather this week. At this point, you should ask yourself if you and your loved ones are fully prepared for the days ahead. Keep in mind that you can never be too ready for a hurricane party to turn into a disaster.

It’s extremely important to complete your storm preparations and leave the area if directed to do so by authorities.

Always listen to the radio and television for the latest information and instructions for your area. This watch should trigger your family’s disaster plan, and protective measures should be initiated, especially those actions that require extra time such as securing a boat and leaving a barrier island. Your family should be in the process of completing protective actions and deciding the safest location to be during the storm.

During a hurricane, close windows, doors and hurricane shutters. If you do not have hurricane shutters, close and board up all windows and doors with plywood. Stay away from low-lying and flood-prone areas. Watch out for flooding which can happen after a hurricane. Do not attempt to drive in flooding water, and stay away from standing water. It may be electrically charged from underground or downed power lines.

A big question that always pops to mind is “What supplies do I need?” Below you will find necessary supplies to add to your hurricane shelf. We went to the American Red Cross website for the best “who, what, when and where’s” on hurricane preparation. Please take a minute or two to read through and make a checklist if needed.
