5 Things to Keep in Your Vehicle in the Event of a Fender Bender

It’s that time of year again! Here in Southwest Florida we value the winter months not only for their cooler temperatures, but also for all of the visitors from the frozen north who will make this place their temporary homes. Of course, this means that there will be a sharp increase in traffic on our roadways which entails a higher risk of minor traffic accidents. Here are five must-haves that you should keep handy in your vehicle in order to handle a fender bender in the best way possible:

  • A small notebook and a pen.
    • It’s important to take down as many details of the accident as possible, and certain details might escape your memory as time goes on. That’s why it is a smart idea to have something available where you can write down all the details and take the information of the other driver(s) involved with the accident.
  • A disposable film camera
    • A picture is worth a thousand words, and this is never more true than in the case of a fender bender. It is crucial to take lots of photos of all vehicles, structures, and property that were effected by the accident, and keep them in a safe place. Most people have a digital camera on their phone these days, but it’s a good idea to have a physical copy of the photos on actual film as a backup in case your phone is lost or damaged at any point.
  • Water
    • Depending on the nature of the accident, you may be stuck with your car for a while. Southwest Florida can still be a very hot and sunny climate during the winter months and you can get dehydrated with fairly little exposure to the elements. So, in the event that you have to wait on a tow truck, you should keep a bottle of H2O handy in order to stay hydrated and beat the heat.
  • An emergency phone
    • Almost everyone has a cell phone in their pocket at all times, but cell phones also have a tendency to run out of battery or go missing when they’re needed the most. If you have an old cell phone lying around that still works, keep it in your car and make sure it’s charged. Most phones are hardwired to be able to call 911, regardless of if they are activated or in service with a mobile carrier.
  • Paperwork
    • This should go without saying, but it’s vital to have updated paperwork in your car at all times. You may want to double-check the papers in your glove box, because certain things might have gone out of date without you noticing. Make sure that your registration, proof of insurance, and drivers license are all currently valid and that they have your current contact information on them.
